Amazing: Record breaking diamond found in Africa and America.
It's a season of Diamond finding, first it was a pastor in Sierra Leone who unearthed a 706-carat diamond. According to the government, this is one of the largest precious stone finds ever made worldwide.
In America a teenager, 14 year-old Kalel Langford found a Diamond on Arkansas state park known as Crater of Diamonds. Visitors to park have high expectations, but for hunting teenager, the dream of finding a diamond came true after just 30 minutes.
In Sierra-Leone, the discovery was made by Pastor Emmanuel Momoh in an artisanal mine in the village of Koyadu in eastern Kono district, a government statement said on Thursday.
A 706-carat diamond was presented to President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma yesterday evening, the statement said.
Receiving the diamond President Koroma thanked the chief and his people for not smuggling the diamond out of the country, it added, referring to the Tankoro chiefdom where Momoh uncovered the gem.
In the Crater of Diamond, Kalel was walking along a riverbank in the Crater of Diamonds when he saw a glimmering brown stone on the ground. It was about the size of a pinto bean. He immediately knew the rock was special.
He called his dad over to look at the stone, and they both "knew we needed to have it looked at," said Craig Langford. The stone was coffee colored and frosty, but they knew it wasn't any old rock.
When the Langfords took the rock to be identified at the park, which charges visitors $10 to search for diamonds, they were shocked to learn it was the seventh largest diamond to be found there, and the largest brown diamond in 40 years: 7.44 carats.
Kalel named his diamond the Superman Diamond because of his love for the Man of Steel. He said he's going to take it home as a souvenir.
Lucky boy. Hope the one that was found in Serria-Leone will benefit the ordinary people.
