Catholic priest survived assassins attack in Nsukka, Enugu state. Read his incredible story.
For Reverend Fr. Malachy Ikenna Ugwuoke - the Pioneer Parish Priest of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Ejuona-Obukpa in Nsukka Local Government Council, Enugu State, this was not what he bargained for when he drove out of the parish house to visit his friend and brother in Christ, Reverend Fr. Dr. Emmanuel EmekaAgujiobi-the Parish Priest of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Ele-Agu, Obukpa.
Indeed, it was a day of terror for the former Parish Priest of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Breme as he was mercilessly attacked by 5 heavily armed men with AK 47 riffles who blocked his way at Umueko along Ele-Agu Obukpa road, Nsukka around 6:45pm.
Narrating his ordeal, Fr. Malachy known as Nwa Jesus Isi na-agba Obara said: “I was heavily attacked. That I am still alive today is by the special grace of God who has proved his worth in my life. I really thank him that I am still alive today. I was on my way to St. Paul's parish, Ele-Agu Obukpa to visit the Parish Priest, Reverend Fr. Dr. Emmanuel Emeka Agujiobi who is a very good friend of mine. “When I reached Umueko village that leads to Ele-Agu Obukpa road, I saw an oncoming vehicle speeding towards my lane so I began contemplating on what might be the cause. Immediately, the vehicle stopped in front of me. It was then that I realised it was a Sienna bus. Lo and behold, 5 young men armed with AK 47 riffles hastily jumped out of the car.
“One shot in the air two times. Two of them; one by the drivers' side and the other at the front seat opened fire on me while I was inside the car. Then, I quickly said in my heart; Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.
“My 2 front glasses were down so they started shooting into the car at a very close range. At this point, one of them shouted at another to enter my car. So as he was trying to open the back door, I then put reverse and moved back speeding, immediately the rest of the gang started chasing and shooting at my car.”
Continuing, Fr. Malachy noted that he was moving back at a very high speed that he nearly hit a big tree behind his car. But God saved him and his car entered a little bush. He maintained that as a result of this he started driving towards them since he was left with no other option as there was no enough space for a u-turn.
“When I was coming towards them with my car from the little bush they were shooting at my car. As i continued driving towards them they continued shooting,” he added.
Reverend Fr. Malachy nwa Jesus isi na-agba obara as he is fondly called noted that as he continued speeding towards their Sienna bus until he hit and sped away.
He narrated: “All I could see were bullets flying over my head. They thought they got me but to my utmost surprise, none of their bullets hit me. When I got to Fr. Agujiobi's parish, I was still very much amazed at what happened. But when I checked all parts of my body, I realised that I am OK and no single bullet touched or hit me. To God be the glory. Up till now, I am still wondering if I was really the driver of the car. I really thank God for saving me and that was miracle. Wonder, they say, never ends.
He expressed: “I really thank the God of priesthood that protects his priests. This was a similar experience that happened to Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka some years back. Our God is still active, powerful and mysterious. Some bullets pierced and got my seat shattered, (i.e.) the drivers' seat and the bullets were targeted at my chest and I was on that sit.
“The windscreen of my car got shattered and the bullet was directed to my head, but no bullet touched me. My prayer for the assassins is that they should drop guns and repent now that they still have the opportunity to do so.”
Meanwhile, the priest disclosed that he has alerted the Nsukka Command of the Special Anti Robbery Squared (SARS) who in their part has commenced investigations on arresting the culprits in question.
