Bizzare: Man have his toe replaced his severed thumb in a "crazy" surgery.

BBC is reporting that a young man whose thumb was severed in a freak accident involving a bull have had his thumb replaced with his toe in a bizzare surgery described by doctors as "crazy idea".

According to reports Zach Mitchell 20, a cattle worker from Australia was working in a remote farm in Western Australia when he was injured by a bull and in the process lost his thumb.

"A bull kicked my hand into the fence," Mr Mitchell said of the incident. After the incident he has undergone two surgical operations to re- attached his thumb and has been largely unsuccessful.

He said that workers from his farm preserved his thumb right after the incident to preventing it from dying off but doctors at a hospital could not reattach it after eight hours of surgery when he was flown to Perth.

"They put it in the esky [cooler] with some ice," he told the BBC, refering to his severed thumbs.

He was intial reluctant of the idea of having his toes replaced his thumb but he approved of the surgery after getting to know that having four finger cannot function effectively without a thumb.

He had his operation at Sydney eyes hopital two weeks ago and lead doctor said that he was not a bit surprised that it took a bit of time to accept the surgery.

Dr Sean Nicklin said, "It is a bit of a crazy idea - they [patients] do not want to be injured in another part of their body," he said. "[However] even if you have got four good fingers, if you do not have something to pinch against them, your hand has lost a huge amount of its function."

Zac will have to undergo a 12 month rehabilitation before he will fully recover. However he's not giving up his on farm work after his ordeal as he's planning to go back once he made full recovery.


The Sydney Eye Hospital said it was rare to transplant a complete toe, like in Mr Mitchell's case, although partial toe relocations were more common.
