31-year old Nigerian teacher fired for ripping off his pupils hijab in New York.

Oghenetega Edah, 31, who had worked as a substitute teacher at PS76 primary school in the Bronx, New York, has been fired after ripping an right year old girl hijab off her head. He was employed January this year.

The girl, Safa Alzockary, was reportedly messing around in class and sitting in Edah’s chair without permission last Tuesday, police said.

When she wouldn’t move, he threatened to take her head scarf off.

‘I’m taking it off,’ he said, before pulling the hijab from her head – causing an injury to her right eye.

The pupil was taken to Jacobi Hospital to have her eye examined, the New York Post reported. Fortunately her cornea wasn’t damaged.

‘This alleged behaviour is completely unacceptable,’ Michael Aciman, a spokesman for the New York Department of Education, said.

‘This individual was removed from the school immediately and his employment has been terminated.’

Safa, whose twin sister and older brother also go to PS76, said  ‘It was scary.’

Her dad Mohamed Alzockary, a grocery shop worker who moved to the US from Yemen, added that he was shocked by the incident.

‘I didn’t expect a teacher to do that to a child,’ he said. ‘She’s OK right now… but kids, they’re nervous.’
