For saving her husband from the jaws of crocodile, this Namibian woman get an award from the police.

A courageous Namibian woman has been awarded a trophy for bravery, by police after saving her husband from the jaws of a crocodile, police said on Monday.

Elizabeth Shintangu, now 34, was doing laundry in the Kavango River near Rundu in the north-east while her husband, Matheus Kativa, was bathing in it in 2016, according to regional police commander Johanna Ngondo and the newspaper The Namibian.

Suddenly, Kativa felt like a car had fallen on top of him, he told the newspaper.

“I screamed for help, and, the next thing, I saw my wife on top of the reptile, fighting it.

“Then it let go of me, and by that time, my lower arm had been severed,’’ the 47-year old farmer added.

Before the couple had time to swim back to the river bank, the crocodile returned and grabbed Kativa again.

“The water was all red with blood, I then saw his face as he waved good-bye,’’ Shintangu was quoted as saying.

She pulled him back from the crocodile’s jaws, but the reptile launched a third attack. Shintangu’s screams alerted people from a nearby village who pulled the couple out of the river.

“For that act of bravery, we decided to honour her’’, Ngondo told dpa.

Kavango East region’s Governor Samuel Mbambo said that in most cases, people either run to look for help, or do nothing, when someone has been attacked by a crocodile.

“I am not saying jump in the river and fight a crocodile, but the fact is that she did it without thinking twice. Men must see how prepared our women are to save us from danger’’, the governor was quoted by The Namibian as saying.

Robbers attack churches, steal offering and personal belonging of worshippers in Akure, Ondo state.

Some churches were invaded by armed robbers on Saturday morning in Akure, the Ondo State capital. They robbed members of the churches of their valuables and the churches’ offering worth millions of naira.

The churches affected, according to a source, were located at Ondo Road and Fanibi areas of Akure.

The robbers reportedly spent several hours carrying out the operations without any interruption. They were also alleged to have shared their stolen items in one of the churches robbed.

It was gathered that as the robbery was ongoing, some members of the church managed to call the control room of the Ondo State Police Command but there was no response from the command.

According to a source, the incident happened during the end of the month’s prayer and vigil services of the churches. The hoodlums were said to have carried out the act between 2am and 4am on Saturday .

One of the victims of the robbery, on condition of anonymity told our correspondent that four members of the robbery gang attacked them in their church and stole all they had, including the church offering.

She disclosed that the hoodlums had robbed about five churches before they showed up in her church.

She said the four robbers that entered her church were armed with guns, machetes, iron rod and wood, adding that they beat those that did not cooperate with them.

She said, “After finishing our vigil at about 3am on Saturday, all of us were going home when some armed men met us on the road. They told us they were members of the vigilance group in the area and they asked us to go back to the church.

“They followed us to the church, on entering the church with us, they closed and lock the door from inside . One of them brought out a pistol and asked all of us to lie down and face the ground. They collected everything on us, especially our phones and money.

“As we faced down, we heard them sharing the money they had stolen from other churches they had robbed earlier. From their conversation, we discovered that they must have attacked no fewer than four churches before us. ”

The victim added that the robbers fled through the window when they heard that policemen were around the area. She said they removed the sim cards from their phones and dropped them on the chair of the church before fleeing.

It was gathered that 15 minutes after the departure of the bandits, men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad arrived the area. No arrest had been made by the police as of the time of this report .

The men of the SARS were said to have recovered a gun and a mobile telephone dropped by the robbers at the scene of the incident.

Police say they are investigating the case.

Outrage as United airline bars girls on leggings form boarding flight.

nited Airlines has incurred social media outrage after barring two  teenage girls wearing leggings from boarding  its flight from Denver in Colorado to Minneapolis  on Sunday.

Officials said the teenagers did not meet a dress code for special pass travelers, stirring a furore on social media.

The two girls, who were traveling with a companion, would not have been turned away for wearing leggings had they been paying customers, United spokesman Jonathan Guerin said as the airline responded to the backlash.

“(The two girls) were instructed that they couldn’t board until they corrected their outfit. They were fine with it and completely understood,” Guerin said, adding that all three passengers missed the flight. He did not know if they had boarded a later plane or made alternate travel arrangements.

Though the three passengers did not complain about their treatment, another traveller , Shannon Watts, who overheard the discussion touched off a firestorm on social media with a series of tweets describing a policy she suggested was unfairly targeting women and girls.

“This behavior is sexist and sexualizes young girls,” Watts said on Twitter. “Not to mention that the families were mortified and inconvenienced.”

United pass travellers  are typically company employees or their friends or family members.

Watts’ tweets and United’s defense of it touched a raw nerve for many women and girls who have made leggings a staple in their wardrobes.

The popularity of leggings has sparked criticism that they are inappropriate attire under certain circumstances. Some schools have barred girls from wearing them to class.

Social media lit up with outrage against the policy and the airline for its response to the initial outcry. Celebrities chimed in with humorous protests.

“I have flown united before with literally no pants on. Just a top as a dress. Next time I will wear only jeans and a top,” model Chrissy Teigen tweeted.

United later put out a statement titled: “To our customers … Your leggings are welcome!” that explained the policy for passholders in greater detail.

That policy also bars midriff-baring tops, attire that reveals undergarments or is designated as sleepwear or swimwear, mini-skirts, shorts that fall less than 3 inches above the knee or dirty or torn clothing.

Guerin conceded that the airline, in its initial response to the flap, could have done a better job of explaining the situation and countering apparently inaccurate information about the incident that appeared on Twitter.

“We’ll definitely take something away from today, but we’ll continue to engage with our customers (on social media),” he said.

HORROR: 40 police officers decapitated in an ambush in DRC

Militia fighters in central Democratic Republic of Congo decapitated about 40 police officers in an ambush, local officials said on Saturday.

It was the deadliest attack on security forces since an insurrection in the region began last August.

The Kamuina Nsapu militants attacked the police on Friday as they drove from Tshikapa to Kananga.

The militia members stole arms and vehicles, Francois Kalamba, speaker of the Kasai provincial assembly, told Reuters.

The insurgency, which has spread to five provinces, poses the most serious threat yet to the rule of President Joseph Kabila, whose failure to step down at the end of his constitutional mandate in December was followed by a wave of killings and lawlessness across the vast central African nation.

“They were apprehended by the militia members and they decapitated about 40,” Kalamba said, adding that the militia spared the lives of six other police officers they captured because those officers spoke the local Tshiluba language.

Corneil Mbombo, president of the Civil Society of Kasai, a province-wide activist group, also told Reuters that about 40 officers had been decapitated.

More than 400 people have been killed in the violence in central Congo, according to the United Nations, and the government said on Tuesday that 67 police officers and many soldiers had died in the clashes
